Malang-November 16, 2018.

The Smart Molecule of Natural Genetics Resource Center (PS SMONAGENES) conducted an innovation activity by holding a Bioinformatics Workshop 2018 with the theme Predict your research result with in silico analysis held on Monday, 8 October 2018 located in MC Room 1.1 Faculty of MIPA Universitas Brawijaya. This activity is part of a program for developing education and distributing knowledge to the community.

According to Anna Safitri, M.Sc., Ph.D as the chief executive of the activity said that the idea of activities stems from observing the development of research which now leads to molecular-based research and use of computer devices in solving research (bioinformatics) problems, while there are still many communities academics that require more understanding of the concepts and technical analysis using the bioinformatics approach. She also said that the enthusiasm of the community was very high, since the number of participants exceeded the target, 60 participants attended the event, from 50 targeted participants.
The workshop consisted of lectures from the experts, and followed by practices, which began at 08.00 and ended at 16.00. The speakers were Prof. Fatchiyah, M.Kes., Ph.D, who delivered the material with the theme “Bioinformatics opened new horizons for reading biological and medical data” and Dr. Sentot J. Raharjo gave a lecture on “Research based on in silico analysis in revealing the potential of active compounds”. The program continued with bioinformatics practicum based on practicum modules in the form of e-paper, including database search, BLAST analysis, primary design, restriction enzymes, alignment and SNP using various relevant bioinformatics software accompanied by reliable and competent instructors and assistants. The practice was ended by giving a mini project assignment to participants to carry out bioinformatics analysis of gene / protein / active compound sequences according to the research interests of each participant. The assignment should be emailed later to committee, in order to gain workshop’s certificate.
One of the participants, Eko gave his opinion, “This event was very good, I get a lot of knowledge from this activity and can interact actively with other researchers. Moreover, the cost of participating in this activity is very affordable compared to other similar activities. Hopefully SMONAGENES can hold follow-up similar activities in the future with deeper studies such as in silico analysis techniques for predicting molecular interactions and gene barcoding “.

SMONAGENES, keep smart working and benefit the community.(eshaf)
